PRAIANO – The Amalfi Coast Italy

What to Do in Praiano

Church of San Genaro

PRAIANO

The Church of St. Gennaro stands grandly as the only building of baroque architecture along the Amalfi Coast. The cathedral has survived several rebuilds and renovations over the centuries. Its splendour is fully revealed inside, with intricate hand-painted majolica tiles covering its dome and terracotta floors.

The piazza next to the 15th-century church hosts several concerts, sports events and festivals throughout the year. It’s an especially awe-inspiring place during the Luminaria di San Domenico festival, which takes place in late July or early August. During this annual event, the piazza’s lit up by thousands of candles in the evenings.

Mairina di Prai Beach

Praiano

Marina di Praia beach might be small, but its setting is very dramatic with steep rocky cliffs hugging its pebbled shore. Enjoy endless sea views while cooling off in the shallow bay or relaxing on a rental sunbed, or escape the heat to enjoy a meal at the beachfront Da Armandino restaurant. It’s open for lunch and dinner.

The beach has been a busy place since medieval times, serving a spot where local fishermen built and repaired their boats. Today, much of the tiny pebbled beach is dotted with colorful boats and fishing nets jostling for space among the sunbathers.

LOCL CERAMICS

Ceramics are among the most popular items to buy in the Praiano area and the Amalfi Coast at large. Around town, you’ll find numerous custom shops where local Praiano residents create ceramics that include intricate designs primarily depicting natural scenery.

There are even certain spots in town where you can go and paint some ceramics yourself if you’re more interested in taking home a customized souvenir. In other locations, you can watch skilled and experienced artists craft ceramic works in person, so you can see how these works of art are made.

LIMONCELLO

If there’s one thing the Amalfi Coast and Praiano is known for, it’s lemons. These citrus fruits are grown throughout the area, bathing the entire town in a refreshing lemon scent. Because of this, you’ll find a wide variety of lemon products available. The most famous, however, is limoncello.

Additionally, you can find lemon granita, lemon treats, and lemon candies at food carts and in stores throughout town. There is even an abundance of lemon-scented candles and lemony influence on local perfumes and artworks that you can take home with you to help you remember your trip.

Ode to Bar DiMartino – Positano

Relaxing at Bar Di Martino

Positano

Bar Di Martino

Via Pasitea, Positano

Once Upon A Time in Positano on the Amalfi Coast not so long ago there was the Bar Di Martino on the curve of Punta Reginella with one of the most scenic panoramas this village of breathtaking panoramas has to offer. Breakfast-lunch-cocktails and late night gatherings brought together visitors from around the world and local residents in a perennially festive mood to see and be seen. To discuss and argue and create new friendships and appointments for the day and the weeks ahead.

I first started gong to Positano way back in the Summer of 1985. I was in my early 20s, working
at the venerable old Italian joint “John’s of East 12th Street” and my boss Nick and his wife Valentina had been there and raved of the place. Valentina said, “I had to go. It’s gorgeous.” I was about to take a trip to Italy, to Rome, Venice, to visit my high school friend JoAnna in Florence, and now Positano. I would also go meet up with some friends in Barcelona, run into my friend Lisa there, and go to Blanes on the Costa Brava as well. In-between Spain and making my way to Venice, I made a stop at The French Riviera to Monaco and staying in Nice where I had a brief affair with a beautiful French girl Chantel.

After my first foray of several trips to Venice, I mad my way down to Positano. Back then, there was no internet, and though they had travel guide books and I had my Frommer’s Guide to Europe on $25 a Day, the amount of info you could get back then as compared to these days, was a dismal fraction of present day travel info. So o that first trip, I took a train from Rome to Naples, which took 3 hours. Then I took the Circumvesuviana that goes from Naples to Sorrento, but someone told me to get off the train at Meta, which I did, and for me to catch a bus in Meta to take me right into Positano, and so I did.

So I hopped on the Blue Sita Bus in Meta and I was on my final leg to Positano. Once on that bus I would be treated to the most beautiful ride of my life. The bus drove from Meta to Positano along the famed Amalfi Drive (Divina Strada). The rode clings to the side of cliffs that soar high above the sea 1,000 feet below. It’s absolutely beautiful, and quite dramatic. That first trip I shall never forget.

A few thousand feet away, you catch your first glimpse of the enchanting little town on the Amalfi Coast, the town of Positano which literally springs up out of the sea, with hotels and white and pastel colored homes that seemed to be stacked on-on-top-of-the-other. Jasmine trees fill the air with their fragrant scent as thousands of bright purple Bougainvillea plants disperse their gorgeous color, along with all sorts of varied shades of flowers that only enhance an already gorgeous setting. So when I first saw this beautiful town springing up out of the Tyrrhenian Sea, I was mesmerized. I’d never seen anything so stunning.

By the time the bus dropped me off in front of the Bar International, I was already in Love. I grabbed my bags and went into the bar. I needed an Espresso and a little something to eat. I also needed to use the bathroom and wash up a bit. I went into the bathroom and this was one of the first of so many things in Positano that struck me. Something little, but it struck me nevertheless, and as you can see, I still remember and talk about it to this day, some 35 years on. What is it, you ask? I walked into the bathroom and can see that the bar and bathroom were quite literally built into the mountain. The mountain was in the bathroom, or vice versa. The wall was quite literally the rock of the mountain. Not rock that was placed there, but it was the mountain, and this building was built into the solid rock of the mountain and was the most inner wall of the building (Bar International). When a went to Bar Di Martino the next day, I would relieved that that building, as well as the restaurant Da Vincenzo was built into the mountain as well, and in the lower dining room at Da Vincenzo, the back wall of the restaurant is the mountain itself.

Yes, I fell in love with Positano in an instant, “Love at 1st sight,” as they saw. and I no matter that the town has been overrun by way too many tourist for a small town, Positano I still love, I guess mainly for the reason that I was a young man making my first explorations of Italy, Europe, Positano, and the gorgeous Amalfi Coast.

As I’ve just said, one of my explorations was going into the cute little Bar Di Martino which was close to my pensione Villa Maria Antonietta, where I stayed my first year in Positano (1985) on the advice of my friend, the poet Rene Ricard who wrote me a letter of introduction to Signora Carmen, the owner of the little pensione. It was a nice little place, affordable, and in a good location right in the center of Positano, and so I spent 4 nights there in the Summer of 1985. The next year (1986) I made a great discovery in coming across Casa Albertina, a lovely hotel right behind Da Vincenzo and Bar Di Martino, and I have been staying at this wonderful hotel ever since.

When I went back to Positano the following year, and I was scouting around for a hotel, I walked into the front door of Casa Albertina, where Lorenzo was sitting behind the desk, and greeted me with a friendly hello. When I inquired about the availability of rooms, I guess Lorenzo could see I was just a young man, and probably didn’t have a lot of money to spend so he gave me what he called “a Special Young Persons Price,” which was $79 and quite a good deal for the quality of this lovely hotel, which is one of my favorites in the entire world, and for anyone looking for a nice place to stay in Positano, I highly recommend to stay there, and so I did, in 1986, again in 1987, and in 2015.

Wow, really got off the main subject of what I wanted to talk about, Bar Di Martino. When I started going to Positano in 1985, Bar di Martino was just a small little town bar that served coffee (espresso / cappuccino) all day long, as well as Cornetto, Campari, Negroni’s, local wine, beer, sandwiches, and the normal things that you’d find a thousands of little local bars all over Italy. Bar Di Martino was a small bar, with not a lot of space inside, but they had tables outside along the outer wall of the bar, as well as tables on terrace on the other side of the street (Via Pasitea) opposite the bar, where I’d go for a Campari after a day at the beach, and before I went back to Casa Albertina to take a late afternoon nap. I got to know the family, the two girls Betty DeMartino and her sister.

The one very cool thing about Bar DiMartino was that it was the cool place for those in-the-know to go to for evening cocktails and just the best place to hang out at at night, after dinner at your chosen restaurant of the evening, Bar DiMartino was the place to go. Lorenzo introduced me to the Di Martino’s and to other people around town. It was my good fortune to walk into Casa Albertino and meet Lorenzo way back in 1986.

Beautifully Appointed Rooms

Casa Albertina is a wonderful 1st Class little family run Hotel that is perfectly situated so you get a nice view of the town from just a little way up, yet a short easy teen minute walk to the Beach and Center of Positano.

I first discovered Casa Albertina way back in 1986 and had 3 glorious days staying there. The son Lorenzo gave me a special rate, seeing I was a young man (22) and probably didn’t have much cash. This hotel is beautifully appointed and the entire staff provides the most friendly service. Casa Albertina is an Absolute Gem.

Note : The first time I stayed at CASA ALBERTINA was the Summer of 1986. The owners sone Lorenzo gave me a special rate of $79 a night, and I had an absolutely wonderful time. The next year when I came back, the price had gone up to $119 a night. When I checked the prices in May of 2018, the rate was $279 a night, and actually a reasonable rate for the quality of this hotel, which is not super deluxe, but does make it in to the luxury category of hotels.

View From VILLA MARIA ANTONIETTA

If You’re on a Budget, Villa Maria Antonietta is on of The Best Options in Town …

Posiitano has to be one of the hardest place in the World to find a hotel room, and in the Budget Category, almost but not Impossible. Villa Maria Antonietta is one of your best options if you want to pay less than $150 US Dollars a night. It’s almost impossible finding a room here in the high season (April to Mid October).  You have a much better chance getting a room here in the off-season when you can get a room for about $96 a night (US Dollars).

I first stayed here in the Summer of 1985, and was recommended this place by the late Poet RENE RICARD. At the time I paid $40 a night, so considering the way things have skyrocketed here in Positano, that you can get a room for about double the price in 2018, that’s pretty reasonable.

The accommodations are basic, but most important, they are clean, the location is Fantastic, you are in Positano and it’s relatively Cheap.

If you want to stay in in Summer, Book Far in Advance !!!

TIPS on GETTING a ROOM in POSITANO and The AMALFI COAST

Positano has to be without question one of the hardest places in the World for the Budget minded to get a hotel room. There are not many options, as most hotels, the prices are astronomical priced. Seriously! This being said, it’s not impossible and there are some options available.

We have Compiled a List of Several Affordable (Cheapest Hotel Rooms in POSITANO) Options for the Budget Minded. It wasn’t easy, but we did it.

It goes without sayint that’s it’s markedly more dificult to find a reasonably priced room here during the high season which runs from mid April to mid September, with mid May to the first weel of Septemeber being super busy.

This all being said, if it’s possible for you to go in October or April, these two months might be your best possible option. If you have plenty of cash and can afford to pay $300 or more a night for a hotel room, then you won’t have as much as a problem.

The other alternative to see Positano if you want to go during the High Season, is to stay in another town like, Paiano right next door to Positano, or Minori, Sorrento or other town near by, and take a bus or Boat to visit Positano, have a nice lunch and do some sightseeing.

Good Luck!

Yes a Wonderful Ristornate Amazing View Great Food Excellet Service … This Hotel and Restaurant is a mainstay of the hugely popular town of Positano on the Amalfi Coast of Italy. Everythin about the place is First Class, the hotel of course , the restaurant and a friendly professional staff of waiter, BBs, host, Chef, cooks, and all who work at this establishment. I’ve eaten here numerous times since 1985, and it’s always been a great experience including my latest trip this past May with my cousin Tony. We went for lunch, this was my cousin Tony’s first time, and he loved as I always have. I think I created a Monster when my cousin Tony said let’s get a bottle of Champagne and a suggested we might get a good quality Italian Sparkling Wine. A few days before we were at Lo Smeraldino Ristorante right on the water in Amalfi. I ordered the Ferrari “Perle” Brut 2007. It was wonderful and Tony was hooked, he loved it, and wanted to get it at almostevry restaurant we went to for the rest of the trip. Now back to Buco di Bacco. Tony scanned the Wine List at Buco, he found the Ferrari “Perle” and ordered another bottle (Vintage 2010). We started drinking it and as with the 5 or so bottles of this wine we had on te trip, it was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed. Now when it came to ordering, for Antipasto we got an order of Melanzane Parmigiano (Eggplant Parm) and some grilled vegetables. Now, though we both love eating Seafood when down on the Amalfi Coast, when we saw Meatballs (Polpette) on the menu, we both ordered some. I ordered a plate of Spaghetti Meatballs while Tony ordered just Meatballs minus any pasta.

The BAR at BUCO Di BACCO

The service as usual was excellent, it was a absolutley gorgeous day in Positano and we were both a couple of Happy Campers outside on the lower Terrazzo of Buca Di Bacco. We both commented on how relaxing and peaceful it felt sitting there on the deck and we both sat back and thorughly enjoyed the whole experience and good fortune to having lunch there at such a nice restaurant in the beautiful town of Positano n the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Yes, we knew we were lucky and we were most certainly greatful to be sharing such a memorable meal together, two Italian-American cosuins in Italy in Positano, The Amalfi Coast. Basta !

That’s the terrazzo of Caffe Positano where all the people are stiing outside, which if you started going to Positano long ago, you may know that spot as the old BAR DeMARTINO, one of my favorite places ever in Positano, but sadly no longer there. Anyway, this is a spectacular spot to get an Apertivo, have lunch or dinner, and just injoy the moment and the beauty before you, and just how “Lucky” you are to be in this Gorgeous Place, known as Positano. Been Going there Since 1985

Positano

Yes, I started going to Da Vincenzo way back in 1985. Ever Since my first trip to the lovely little Seaside Town on The Amalfi Coast, that was yet to be discover by the masses all around the World. Yes, there were people who had heard about this gorgeous place, but not nearly as many as do now. Yes, Positano for the most part was still relatively un-known back then. That’s before Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. made the movie ONLY YOU that brought the town to the attention of so many more Millions of people then had ever even heard of the place before. Anyway Cei la Vie.

Now back to Rene Ricard and myself and how I discovered and went to Da Vincenzo way back in the Summer of 1985 (Bar DeMartino also). It was just a few days before my long awaited first trip to Italy, Spain, and the South of France when as I was walking down 2nd Avenue one night I ran into my friend Alma who was with the Poet RENE RICARD. We were all chatting on the street when I mentioned my trip. When I said I was going to Rome, Venice, and positano, Rene got quite excited and told me the best places to go to in Rome, Venice and Positano. So besides all the info Rene gave me on Rome and Venice, he told me all about Positano and where to stay and where to eat which included going to Da Vincenzo where Rene told me I’d get the Best Plate of SPAGHETTI VONGOLE that Id’ ever have in my entire life.

“Some of The BEST FOOD in All of POSITANO”

I’m now totally in Love with this place. Not so crazy about the name, but everything else couldn’t be better. For me, Latteria has some of the best food in all of Positano. If you get tried of paying the high prices in restaurants, and you want some outstanding home-cooked local cuisine, go to Latteria, they’ve got everything. The make tasty Eggplant Parmigiano, Past, Frittata, Aracini (Rice Balls), Lasagna, and Sandwiches. There are a few tables out on their patio on the side of the building where you can relax with your tasty little lunch (Breakfast or Dinner). This place is a groceria / salumeria, so you can buy fresh fruit, wine, water, and everything you need to bring back to your room.

Latteria not only is one of the cheapest places to eat in town, but their food, though cheaper, is as good as any restaurant in town, “trust me.” And it’s a little secret that many tourist don’t know about, so go there and enjoy.

DELIKATESSAN

Delikatessan

Yes another deli  (Salumeria). Believe it or not, Salumerias / Rosticcerias have some of the best food in almost every city in Italy, and so is the case in Positano with Latteria Deli and here at Delikatessen. We decided to grab some food to take back some food to enjoy on our balcony. The food was of great quality and very reasonably priced. We bought some Pasta, Panini, and Eggplant, Arancini (Rice Balls) . Everyhtng was super tasty. They make great Sandwiches (Panini) taht a great to take along with some Fruit and Arancini for an awesome Beach Lunch. If you are staying in Positano for a while and don’t want to eat out all the time then this is a great option. They have a great wine selection if you like to do as we do and keep a bottle or two back at our room , as well asfruit and  bottled water which you always need.

Hotel Poseidon

POSITANO

The Hotel Poseidon is one of our top picks. The hotel is situated in one of the most ideal spots in all of Positano, in its location as a central point to restaurants, beaches, and other points of interest when staying on the Amalfi Coast. The hotel, in addition to having lovely rooms, and great service, Hotel Poseidon is one of the few hotels in town with a pool that’s set upon a large terrace that has one of the most exquisite view in all of Positano. In addition, along with a bar, the hotel has a top notch restaurant on the terrace as well, serving fine local cuisine.
